9 Years On Air: How LASU Radio Became the Beating Heart of Campus Life

Nine years ago, LASU made a promise to give students and staff a voice that would reach far beyond our lecture halls. On February 18, 2016, that promise came true as LASU Radio 95.7 FM went on air for the first time.
“Student from other departments aside from mass communication, who have flare for broadcasting, have volunteered as presenters for different programmes,” said Mr. Muyiwa Ojekunle, the pioneer station manager at the 2016 launch.
Back then, the goal was to provide a simple platform for campus conversations, news, and the pulse of student life. But now, that goal has been well exceeded.
From Silent Speakers to a Buzzing Frequency
What started as a quiet station in a modest studio has become a mainstay in the daily routines of thousands of students. Whether you’re in the shuttle bus, at the canteen, or walking past the Faculty of Arts, chances are someone is playing LASU Radio in the background
Behind the scenes are students who double as journalists, DJs, show hosts, and producers — learning the craft in real time.
Among the most impactful programs on the radio is Towards Transparency — an anti-corruption project led by Dr. Tunde Akanni and supported by the Centre for Anti-corruption and Open Leadership (CACOL). It’s one of the station’s many efforts to tackle real issues with real conversations.
The Station That Grew With Us
It’s not just about the programs, — it’s about the people. For those who tuned in during their diploma days to final-year students now hosting real-time shows, LASU Radio has been there.
Jamiu Yahya, the station’s manager, has seen it all. From technical glitches in the early days to student producers mastering the soundboards, he’s watched the station grow with every generation of students.
Nine Years of Building Dreams
For many mass communication students, LASU Radio is the first place they get to feel the thrill of a live broadcast. It’s not unusual to meet a graduate now working in top media houses who once hosted a morning show or helped edit audio clips on campus.
The experience goes beyond the mic. Students learn how to plan a segment, run interviews, promote shows on social media, and even handle the pressure of live call-ins. It’s real media work — right within the walls of LASU.
Road Ahead
With podcasting becoming more popular and student content creators popping up everywhere, there’s talk of expanding LASU Radio’s reach online. Live streaming and on-demand content could be the next big steps for the radio station.
Conclusion: More Than a Station
Nine years in, LASU Radio isn’t just a station. It has become a reflection of the university’s energy that documents the struggles, wins, talents, and ideas of students, in their voices.
So next time you tune in, remember you’re not just listening. You’re part of a 9-year legacy that’s still growing, still learning, and still speaking — loud and clear.
